Seriously. People really buy this shit?

Say “hi” to China and smile, goyim!

I've been doing this for years. I keep a book on top of my phone too. We are very fucking stupid for filling our homes with cameras and microphones.

We are very fucking stupid for filling our homes with cameras and microphones.

I'd argue we didn't know companies even could spy on us that way. If you told most people when they were buying their first smartphones in the early 2010s that they were being spyed on via microphones and cameras in their phone they would call you schizophrenic.

Let us monitor you 24/7 you bigot. Our slave children in China who manufactured this laptop will get their feelings hurt.

Then make a damn laptop without a camera.

33
CousinEddie 33 points ago +33 / -0

I can almost guarantee they’ll make a special apple camera cover and it’ll cost $30.

This is a big reason I’ve moved off Apple. As soon as my phone dies I’m 100% done. The Mac laptop, iPad, and iPhone will all be in a filing cabinet unused and replaced.

Apple stopped innovating after Jobs died. They truly have nothing to offer other than overpriced accessories for overpriced, run of the mill devices.

When they sold a fucking stand for their monitors sold separately and costing 100s of dollars, that was pretty much the redpill for my entire family. The brand is Nothing but a fleece of consumers and they don’t even try to hide it anymore.

Apple is absolutely horrible all privacy concerns aside they refuse to even use a standard data connector on their ssds so you can't even recover your data if your machine dies. The last good apple was the 2012 macbook pro non retina. It is new enough that it uses a core i series processor and they fixed the gpu overheating issues that plagued the 2011 model and it is old enough that it still uses a standard sata hdd / ssd. Everything newer including the 2012 retina uses a nonstandard ssd connector designed to prevent the consumer from recovering their own data. (how hard is it to use an m.2 ssd?)

Combine that with their refusal to even include a headphone jack on the new iphones, and their iphone battery scandal and it becomes clear their business model is to screw over the consumer.

My Dell mobile precision has no webcam or microphone. Ordered it that way.

6
madlad2020 6 points ago +6 / -0

I can confirm I have a nice m6600 sitting here that was optioned without a webcam and with management engine disabled. The newer lattitudes we had in the office all have sliders built into the bezel.

For work machines I use to just place a piece of tape over it, on my own personal devices I would just remove the 6 screws and unplug the minature usb cable.

4
WestPalm 4 points ago +4 / -0

I'm rocking the M4700 fully loaded no webcam.

3
eray00c 3 points ago +3 / -0

If you have a Macbook, you can have a repair shop just disconnect the camera ribbon cable. Lots of high profile people have the webcam and speakers/microphone disconnected on a hardware level, much more secure than just taping over it.

Don't forget to tape something over the microphone as well

8
Teenus 8 points ago +8 / -0

Engineer here, that doesnt work from a surveillance standpoint, the mic will just max the gain and compression and it will only end up muffling the sound or making it even louder.

4
SoggyBiscuit 4 points ago +4 / -0

Any suggestions on blocking it?

3
Teenus 3 points ago +3 / -0

Considering that every speaker on your mobile device can be used as a microphone there currently isnt any way to stop audio surveillance short of having a phone with no transducers at all, which would be pointless. If you are gonna talk about sketchy stuff never do it over the phone or in a room with a phone. The best way is to stick your phone in a car or mailbox outside the building you're conducting business in.

1
PropagandaWizard1984 1 point ago +2 / -1

I put tape and a sticker over my mic hole. I tweaked the gain to max and tested it. NOTHING! It doesn't pick up normal voice or even me shouting from a few feet away. So there!! Experiments trump your random conjecture!

1
Teenus 1 point ago +1 / -0

Did you also adjust the ratio on your compressor or are you just retarded?

Sometimes its on the lid sometimes its on the palm rest it really depends on what model laptop it is every manufacture is different. Normally the user manual will show you where it is so just look that up on cluck cluck go.

I have a roll of old electrical tape that the adheasive long since dried out. I placed a small piece between my phone camera and case and it hasnt moved yet. (you could use paper too if you wanted, even sharpie it black so it looks professional and then cover it in a small piece of packing tape to keep it from getting sweated on)

thenameisdonald 3 points ago +3 / -0

Blue masking tape works well since it isn’t gunky stick and can be taken off and reapplied a bunch.

2
PropagandaWizard1984 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's called "painters tape", also comes in green.

10
SWIM 10 points ago +10 / -0

To be fair, they’re talking about those plastic sliding privacy covers. The tolerances are very tight when closing the screen and that cover pushing against the keyboard when closed can break the glass.

I don’t know why you’d spend money on some Chinese plastic when some black electrical tape would do the trick though.

9
madlad2020 9 points ago +9 / -0

The correct way to do it is with a piece of tape. The problem is there are a lot of idiots out there using crap like this that adds a physical protrusion to the lid. Combine this with apples shitty glass screens and a bit of pressure from being in your bag and you have a cracked screen. It would help if the moron that wrote this article used a relevant picture to convey this instead of insulting their readers intelligence.

I bought this Alienware thing in 2013, I know it was expensive but it was upgradable... I’ve added ram, moved to flash storage over the years and just take good care of it. It’ll still run games, although not in the highest settings, but more important it still does my day to day shit.

We hit peak computer ages ago, you can tell how much they inflate the shit out of meaningless benchmarks.

It’s no wonder that Linus guy was openly weeping about creating a monster audience dedicated to conspicuous consumption.

There's literally no need to tape your camera if you don't live in Hong Kong or China.

1
BirbEnthusiast420 1 point ago +4 / -3

Im pretty sure the LED next to the camera is HARDWIRED to the camera for bascially all laptops nowadays. Anytime the camera is filming, it uses electricity, which activates the LED.

Worrying about the camera secretly spying on you is pretty silly imho. Tho j do have a laptop with an integrated cover, and its almost always closed

https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/6758/can-webcams-be-turned-on-without-the-indicator-light

It seems to be dependent on whether its an external camera (most of these have an LED that can be turned off via their firmware)

Or an internal LED (Atleast for some manufactures, including apple).

In the end you would have to research the specific laptop you have.

But calling it "Totally not true" is you know... Totally not true.

PropagandaWizard1984 1 point ago +1 / -0

To assume all things that are possible are known is folly.

A new novel hack could always do something you never imagined. This is the nature of zero day exploits. Think of state sponsored agencies and the capabilities they have, those capabilities are considered top level national secrets. It is known via leaks that the CIA/NSA can turn on any mic or camera from any phone without any outward sign that activation has occurred. In my opinion the main intel agencies have capabilities that would shock and confuse most any computer nerd. Assume they can do anything and you are probably correct. They have limitless budgets, thousands of employees, top tech, top talent, Ect.

Look at the Twitter hack and all the juicy things that have come out about the God level Admin panel. The powers that be have more power than you can imagine.....but you think a little LED protects you?????? Good fucking luck with that!!!!

1
BirbEnthusiast420 1 point ago +1 / -0

With all due respect, there is no hacking a electrical circuit. If the LED is hardwired to the webcam, which it should be, then there is no turning on the camera without also activating the LED.

And thats all there is to it. No ifs or buts. Even a limitless budget cant hack the laws of electromagnetism.

Now: are all led hardwired to the camera? Probably not. It heavily depends on the specific laptop.

1
PropagandaWizard1984 1 point ago +1 / -0

So you concede that your savior LED is not the norm, thus pretty useless as a security device.

Also look at hardware exploits like Spectre and Stuxnet

Your lack of imagination is not shared buy the best hackers rest assured. Where there is a will there is a way.
