Its NFT (Non Funkible Tokens).

Basically a picture on a website that has code that tells people you own this. Because you own this, people put a price on it. But them people figured out you can right click and save them as images.

So to confirm that a jpeg is the original jpeg they put a jpeg sticker on the jpeg to say "this is the first jpeg!"

And then people photo shopped a fake jpeg sticker on.

NFTs have lots of real world potential but not this crap. This is money laundering in it's purist form. NFTs would be incredibly useful for something like concert tickets, and not having to go through a ticket vendor, even if you wished to sell it because you couldn't make it (death in the family, etc).

it is digital baseball cards. It can have a small purpose, but not a 1 hour drawing of a monkey selling for half a million dollars.

For a real purpose, there is Stonetoss - you are paying someone so they continue to make political cartoons. In exchange you get a digital baseball card.

Stonetoss was deplatformed for wrongthink by OpenSea, the NFT platform. Stonetoss was making and selling NFT's on there and they banned him.

Technically theyre "Non-Fungible Tokens", but they might as well be Funko Pops because of how soy they are.

And you dont even need to right click to save them, you can use the windows snipping tool to screenshot them

The most depressing part of this phenomenon is the amount of people who didn't immediately realize this the moment they learned what an NFT actually is.

No? That was known about since the beginning from my understanding. All that was ever being bought is a slight change on ledgers declaring you "own" a certain "token".

So to confirm that a jpeg is the original jpeg they put a jpeg sticker on the jpeg to say "this is the first jpeg!"

Is that a thing?

I am bending the turth here a bit. Yes most of us knew this. But there are some boomers out their that didn't get it through all the techno-lingo.

Is that a thing?

Yeah but think of it more as a twitter check mark. Something to give it Authenticity in an unauthentic world.

I can just barely see my way to not thinking about bitcoin et al as tulip bulb nonsense, but million dollar .jpegs really undermines the credibility of the entire enterprise for me.

NFTs can store more than just ape.jpgs. Sure would be nice if devs woke the fuck up and actually did so.
