So when the "evil alt-right types" all cheer it on, they have their "proof" that the ideas are popular with nazis and white supremacists. Better to go on the record as dismissing it as not far right enough

I agree, but think about all the things people are convinced to believe. And even if those people aren't as widespread, articles and Wikipedia would then be able to say "these ideas have been associated with nazis according to this article" and so it works its way in to public record by way of second hand citation.
